A Sumner man will share his personal memories of D-Day this weekend at the Pierce County Library in Sumner.
Bill Heath’s presentation, “Remembrance and Sacrifice: A Personal, Firsthand Account of D-Day, June 1944,” is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the library, 1116 Fryar Ave. Admission is free.
Heath is a former Sumner High School principal. He landed on Omaha Beach in France and also guarded German prisoners of war while serving in the 302nd Brigade, the library said in a news release.

In 1999, Congress authorized the construction of a memorial to the 34th president, Dwight Eisenhower, and, in 2009, Frank Gehry won a competition to design it. His plan, approved in 2010, calls for turning a four-acre site at the base of Capitol Hill into a kind of memorial campus, partly enclosed by 80-foot-high woven-metal tapestries depicting scenes from Eisenhower’s life. Plans were moving forward for the memorial — expected to cost at least $140 million — when controversy struck.
She was shy, old-fashioned, a little dowdy. She’d had a traumatic youth, and no particular passion or work other than playing the piano. And she was just the first of four wives for writer Ernest Hemingway who, when Hadley Richardson met him, was a struggling Chicago journalist.
The Sumner branch of the Pierce County Library System will host a self-publishing workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 18.
