A district Court of Appeals has ruled that Kitsap County prosecutors can continue their case against a man accused of providing access to a gun to his then-girlfriend’s 9-year-old son, who then brought the weapon to school.
The number of concealed pistol licenses being issued in Thurston County has soared the past three years — from 2,888 in 2010, to 3,467 in 2011, up to 4,395 in 2012.
The line starts forming at 7:30 a.m. — an hour before the office opens. By the time staff members at the Law Enforcement Support Agency unlock the doors, the crowd has grown to 40 or 50 — mostly white men — and winds down the sidewalk along Tacoma Avenue South. They’re waiting for concealed pistol licenses – the pieces of paper that allow private citizens to pack loaded pistols in public.
In Washington Pierce County and throughout the state, people have been grabbing up concealed pistol licenses at unprecedented rates since the elementary school massacre at Newtown, Conn., and President Barack Obama’s subsequent vow to reduce gun violence.
