 • There are museums you can visit on a budget. Check out these:

Children’s Museum of Tacoma, in its new location, hosts a variety of interactive exhibits, play programs, weekly education events and more. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays-Sundays, 1501 Pacific Ave., Tacoma. Pay-as-you-will admission. 253-627-6031, childrensmuseumoftacoma.org.

The always-free Karpeles Manuscript Museum, currently has two exhibits: “Spiritualism” includes manuscripts from Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes, and manuscripts from Harry Houdini; “World War II” includes a Japanese flag captured at the Battle of Okinawa and the navigator’s flight log of the Enola Gay at the time of its dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Both exhibits will run through Aug. 24. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays. Karpeles Manuscript Museum, 407 S. G St., Tacoma. 253-383-2575.

    The Harbor History Museum’s new special exhibition, “Savage Ancient Seas,” opened on Saturday and will run through July 14. The exhibit features fossil casts from Triebold Paleontology, a Colorado-based organization that has been traveling the country with the showcase, and it’s never been seen in the Pacific Northwest.

  • Tacoma Art Museum reveals design for new wing

    The Tacoma Art Museum released renderings Wednesday for its new Western American art wing, revealing a street-level extension joined to the current building by a tall canopy. Construction is expected to begin in the fall, with completion set for late 2014.
