The control tower at Tacoma Narrows Airport near Gig Harbor might close due to Federal Aviation Administration budget cuts caused by sequestration.
Pierce County has big plans for the Tacoma Narrows Airport. And why not? When the county bought it from the City of Tacoma four years ago, it did so with a promise to focus more intensely on the airport than its previous owner.
With the federal sequester-induced closure of Tacoma Narrows Airport’s air traffic tower — among others — having been postponed until June 15, there is potentially some more good news: Pierce County is exploring a plan to tap private sponsors to keep the airport’s air traffic control tower open in the wake of federal plans to shutter it, and 148 contract towers like it, nationwide.
The Federal Aviation Administration’s contract control tower at the Tacoma Narrows Airport in Gig Harbor may close as the FAA implements the budget sequestration. This proposed tower closure is one of many that could occur at airports around the country.
Pierce County officials are keen on having the public involved when it comes to weighing in on the future of the Tacoma Narrows Airport.
