This story has been written before.

Five times in the past eight years, in fact.

Once again, Bellarmine Prep of Tacoma finished atop The News Tribune’s All-Sports Championships.

In the 24th edition of the contest that measures athletic success of high schools in all classifications, the Lions won the Class 4A crown for the second consecutive year.

Despite winning only one state title, Bellarmine Prep’s margin of victory was wider this year than last – 41/2 points over Kentwood. The Lions totaled 287.3 points, to beat Central Valley of Spokane (229.3).

Bellarmine Prep scored points in 12 sports, more than any other 4A school. The Lions’ state title came in girls golf, but they were second in girls soccer, girls cross-country and boys golf; and third in boys soccer. The Lions also had top-eight finishes in football, volleyball, boys basketball and girls track.

However, Bellarmine Prep has a ways to go before becoming king of the all-sports competition. Mead of Spokane, which placed eighth in Class 4A this year, has a record 13 titles.

Bellarmine Prep was one of two schools to defend its all-sports crown.

In Class 1B, Almira/Coulee-Hartline used a boys basketball title and runner-up finishes in football, baseball and fastpitch to win its third all-sports title in four years.

The other four classifications saw new champions. But some schools were not strangers to finishing atop the all-sports standings.

In Class 3A, Seattle Prep posted 301 points – the highest total in all classifications – and finished on top for the first time since 2008-09. The Panthers won one state title (girls soccer) and finished in the top four of six other sports (boys cross-country, volleyball, boys basketball, boys golf, girls tennis and boys tennis).

Interlake proves that no matter what happens during the regular season, it’s the postseason that counts. The Saints take a beating as the only 2A team in the multi-classification KingCo 3A/2A league, but that didn’t slow them down this year.

Despite taking a roundabout way to qualify for state tournaments and meets, the Bellevue school won state titles in girls soccer, boys golf and boys tennis on its way to its first all-sports crown.

The Saints finished barely ahead of second-place Sehome of Bellingham, which was going for its third consecutive all-sports crown. Interlake won’t get a chance to defend its title, however. The Saints will be a 3A school when the fall sports season begins.

In Class 1A, King’s quest for a fourth straight all-sports title was squashed by Colville.

The Seattle private school got off to a hot start by scoring points in every fall sport. The Indians, who won the volleyball state title, finished strong. Colville placed second in fastpitch and had strong showings in boys and girls track and girls tennis.

Waitsburg-Prescott was a first-time winner in Class 2B. The Cardinals, who were ninth in last year’s all-sports tally, were powered by state championships in football and boys soccer, plus a runner-up finish in wrestling.
