Clearing out the notebook from Jamie Moyer’s start at Cheney Stadium on Thursday:
Moyer has pitched in 696 major league games and 112 minor league games, but only two Pacific Coast League games. Both were at Cheney Stadium.
Moyer has won both his PCL starts: one for Tacoma – a rehabilitation outing for the Mariners in 1997 – and Thursday’s game against Tacoma.
Twenty-two-year-old Tacoma starter Danny Hultzen was also making his second PCL start.
At age 49, Moyer was older than both managers and all three umpires. He is 13 years older than his oldest teammate, infielder Chris Woodward.
When Moyer was a minor leaguer coming up through the Chicago Cubs system, he played for Geneva and Pittsfield. Both teams no longer exist.
Moyer reached the Triple-A Iowa Cubs in 1986. They still exist, but the league they were in – the American Association – disbanded in 1998.
After struggling to hold down a major league job in his mid-20s, Moyer spent time with three Triple-A clubs who are still thriving today: Rochester, Louisville and Toledo. All are in the International League.
Moyer has a total of 56 minor league wins. Add that to his major league total of 269 and he has easily surpassed 300.
LIMONTA UPDATE
Recently released by the Tacoma Rainiers, infielder/outfielder Johan Limonta quickly signed a contract with the Mexico City Red Devils of the Mexican League.
He went 2-for-5 in his first game with his new team Friday night.
Limonta, who escaped Cuba in 2004 and became a U.S. citizen this year, played seven seasons in the Mariners organization before drawing his release June 20.
Mike Curto is the radio broadcaster for the Tacoma Rainiers.
