People interested in serving on a new, but temporary, state shrimp advisory committee only have a few days to throw their hat in the ring.
The state Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking nominations for candidates to serve on the citizen committee that advises the department and the Fish and Wildlife Commission on Puget Sound recreational shrimp fishing issues, especially the catch allocation for sport and commercial fishermen.
Those issues will likely include recreational harvest allocation, structuring sustainable fishing opportunities and designing fishing seasons, Rich Childers, state shellfish manager, said in a press release.
As many as 10 individuals will be chosen for the temporary appointments, which begin July 15.
“The Fish and Wildlife Commission recently decided to review and update the Puget Sound shrimp policy, which includes catch allocations for sport and commercial shrimp fisheries,” Childers said in the release. “That will be a major focus of discussion for the advisory group in the months ahead.”
The appointments are expected to expire when the policy review process is complete, most likely around the end of the year, he said.
People interested in serving on the committee should include the following information: name, address, telephone number, email address of the nominee; specific experience; the marine area of Puget Sound where nominees harvest shrimp; the reasons why they are interested in being an adviser; their views on how an adviser should work with other advisory groups and the methods they would use to relay information to regional constituents and to assist in productive communication with the agency.

Nominees need not be affiliated with an organized group and any group or individual may submit a nomination. Appointees will be notified by July 10.
Nominees should be available for advisory committee meetings three to four times through the end of the year. Additional conference call meetings may also be held to discuss management issues.
