RICHLAND -- Richland residents can resume placing their green yard debris container curbside this week.
"Containers should be rolled to the curb by 7 a.m. on the same day as garbage collection occurs. A separate truck will pick up yard debris and take it to the composting area near the Horn Rapids Landfill," a city news release said.
Curbside collection schedules were included in residents' January utility bills and also are available at City Hall and online at www.ci.richland.wa.us/solidwaste under the Residential Yard Waste section.
FERNDALE - City residents will have at least three opportunities in the coming weeks to ask questions and comment on a bond measure for a new library.
Ferndale voters will decide on April 23 whether the city should issue a $550,000 bond to fully fund construction of a $5.4 million library building near City Hall. If 60 percent of voters approve, the city would establish a property tax to repay the bond. The owner of a $250,000 home would pay $11.86 a year.
City Council is considering a resolution Monday, April 1, to show support for the ballot measure. The public is invited to comment on the resolution at the meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. at the Community Resource Center, 5694 Second Ave.
Three artists or artist teams with national track records are vying to create a signature art piece for Boise City Hall.
CONNELL -- For decades, high noon in Connell was announced with a piercing whistle. But three years ago, it fell silent -- the wires accidentally cut during a remodel of the old firehouse.
"I remember that day. As soon as the wires were cut, the whistle sounded and it took 20 or 30 minutes to get it turned off," said Larry Turner, public works director for the city.
Mary Hall, owner of Connell Pharmacy, just a few doors down from the whistle tower, remembers it too. "It was deafening," she said.
Many people in Whatcom County might not know who architect Henry Klein was, but they likely are familiar with several of the buildings that he designed.
The award-winning Skagit County architect, who died March 5 at the age of 92, designed the Performing Arts Center and Mathes and Nash residence halls at Western Washington University, as well as the senior activity centers in Bellingham and Ferndale.
Prominent buildings in Skagit County that he designed include the Skagit County Administration Building, Mount Vernon Public Library, The Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner, and Mount Vernon High School's gym and field house
