Steilacoom High grad, 19, dies while climbing wilderness peak
Last updated: July 4th, 2012 07:48 AM (PDT)

A 19-year-old DuPont man died last weekend while climbing a peak in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.

Matthew Trinkle’s roommate reported him missing when he did not return by Saturday night from climbing 8,840-foot Dragontail Peak. Another group of climbers found his body Sunday in a rock gulley below the summit.

Efforts to recover the body have been hampered by bad weather, but officials hope a helicopter will be able to fly Wednesday, Chelan County sheriff’s operations chief John Wisemore said Tuesday.

A deputy found Trinkle’s vehicle at the Mount Stuart trailhead.

Trinkle graduated from Steilacoom High School in 2010 and was attending Central Washington University in Ellensburg.
