100 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 5, 1912

Assisted by a number of visiting power boats, the regatta, given under the auspices of the Tacoma Yacht Club, took place this afternoon. This evening there will be a luncheon at the yacht club grounds, preceding the presentations of prizes.

75 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 5, 1937

Here’s another inducement for boys to compete in the Tacoma Soap Box Derby, July 24. Each heat winner will be presented a picture of himself crossing the finish line – an award that he will treasure for many years.

50 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 5, 1962

Canadian and American Soap Box Derby drivers were to meet this afternoon at the County City Building here, starting two days of “hands across the border” activities. Paramount Pictures photographers will film the events as part of a film about Soap Box racing to be distributed throughout the world.

    Arden Vie, the 101-year-old Pasco man who fell in love with soap operas 50 years ago, is featured in the March 18 edition of Soap Opera Digest, his son Greg Vie told the Herald.

    His father, a fan of Days of Our Lives, was featured in a recent Herald story about his invitation to visit the Hollywood set by the cast of the soap opera where they helped Arden Vie celebrate his 101st birthday.

    Centenarian Arden Vie has been an ardent fan of the soap opera Days of Our Lives since the 1960s.

    At age 101, the Pasco man still is watching the show. And because of that devotion, the show's producers recently invited him to the set.

    Vie can't remember what attracted him to the soap all those years ago, but once he started, he was hooked.
