Closures planned on I-5/state Route 16 interchange
Highways: Crews will set girders in place
Last updated: July 5th, 2012 12:26 PM (PDT)

As part of the project to improve Tacoma’s Interstate 5/state Route 16 interchange, crews working for the state Department of Transportation have scheduled several nighttime closures over the next two weeks.

The most notable closure will be all lanes of eastbound state Route 16 approaching the Nalley Valley Viaduct.

The closures will allow crews to set concrete bridge girders in place, according to Transportation Department spokeswoman Claudia Bingham Baker. The new bridge will be used as a temporary detour for eastbound state Route 16 traffic while the original Eastbound Nalley Valley Viaduct is demolished and rebuilt.

The closures are planned as follows:

SOUTH TACOMA WAY

Today and Friday, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction between Pine and Wilkeson Streets from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

July 12 and 13, reducing traffic to one lane in each direction between Pine and Wilkeson streets from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

July 16 to 18, closing all lanes between Pine and Wilkeson Streets from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Detour via South Center Street.

11 p.m.: Close all eastbound lanes at Union Avenue. Detour via Union Avenue interchange, South 38th Street and I-5.

4 a.m.: Reopen all eastbound lanes. (On July 14, eastbound lanes will reopen at 6 a.m.)
