Oil spills into Tacoma's Blair Waterway
An accident Friday night aboard a vessel in the Blair Waterway caused about 50 gallons of oil to spill into the shipping channel at the Port of Tacoma.
According to the State Department of Ecology, a tanker truck on board the MV Midnight Sun was struck by another vehicle, rupturing one of the truck’s four compartments.
About 1,500 gallons of lube oil spilled out of the tanker, but most was contained on the ship’s deck.
The Department of Ecology and the Coast Guard both responded.
According to Ecology, a private contractor, NRCES, and other cleanup crews were working on the deck and on the water Saturday. The spill to water was controlled with an oil containment boom, and no more oil was believed to have gotten into the waterway.
