The Double-A Jackson Generals had no difficulty replacing Danny Hultzen in their starting rotation.
When Hultzen was promoted to Triple-A Tacoma, the Seattle Mariners elevated left-hander Anthony Fernandez from Class-A High Desert to Jackson.
All Fernandez has done is reel off complete-game victories in his first two starts, and then add a third straight win Wednesday.
Fernandez is 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA since being promoted. Included was a complete-game, two-hit shutout of Pensacola on June 28.
Fernandez is a 6-foot-4 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic. The Mariners signed him as an international free agent when he was 16 in 2006.
He has climbed steadily through the minor league system, earning his midseason promotion by posting a 3.68 earned-run average and a 79-to-14 strikeout-to-walk ratio in the hitter-friendly California League.
All-Star Rainiers
It’s All-Star week in the major leagues (and also in Triple-A), and this year Rainiers fans can watch five former Tacoma players in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
Felix Hernandez is the lone Mariners representative, and he pitched for Tacoma in 2004.
The other four former Rainiers will represent different teams in the All-Star Game:
Adam Jones, Baltimore Orioles – played for Tacoma in 2006 and ’07.
Asdrubal Cabrera, Cleveland Indians – with Rainiers in 2005 and ’06.
Bryan LaHair, Chicago Cubs – with Rainiers 2006 through ’09.
R.A. Dickey, New York Mets – with Rainiers in ’08. – Mike Curto
