Washington High student wins $1,000 scholarship, chosen for Boys Nation in D.C.

The American Legion has selected Jacob San Agustin of Washington High School to attend the American Legion Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., this month.

The American Legion has selected Jacob San Agustin of Washington High School to attend the American Legion Boys Nation in Washington, D.C., this month.

San Agustin is one of two delegates selected from the state based on leadership skills, academic record and activity at American Legion Evergreen Boys State.

The weeklong program introduces students to the structure and function of the federal government while combining lectures and forums with visits to federal agencies, institutions, memorials and historical spots.

San Agustin won a $1,000 scholarship.

    A Richland Boy Scout troop that sent care packages to soldiers was presented Tuesday with an American flag flown in combat in Afghanistan.

    Troop 249 prepared and sent a number of packages to the 168th Brigade Support Battalion’s Alpha Company, said J.R. Freeman-Pollard, a Boy Scouts of America unit commissioner.

    Combat flags typically are reserved for dignitaries or family members of fallen soldiers, however the battalion was moved by the care packages and wanted to show their gratitude, Freeman-Pollard said in a news release.
