100 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 12, 1912

To voice their protest against vice conditions alleged to exist in their neighborhood and to upbraid other property owners for renting houses to persons of bad repute, South D Street property owners met last night in the St. Francis Hotel. The meeting resulted in a committee of five being appointed to consult with attorneys as to legal procedure and to remonstrate with property owners who rent to other than a respectable class.

75 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 12, 1937

An automobile driving school for women will open Wednesday in the American Legion auditorium and run for five consecutive Wednesdays, under the auspices of the Olympia Traffic Safety Council, Police Chief John M. Walker, chairman of the council, announced today.

50 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 12, 1962

Integration leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Rev. Ralph Abernathy were released from jail in Atlanta today over their protests after someone paid fines for them. “I don’t know who paid it,” King said. “We didn’t want to leave, but we couldn’t stay any longer. It makes us very, very unhappy.” They were puzzled by their surprise release. They said they had received fine treatment during their stay in the city jail.
