Charges filed against man who was shot during Tacoma burglary

Pierce County prosecutors Wednesday filed two felony charges against a 35-year-old man shot while allegedly burglarizing a Tacoma home last month.
Jonathan Coggins pleaded not guilty to first-degree burglary and second-degree assault. Coggins, who has a criminal record, was ordered jailed in lieu of $200,000 bail.
Prosecutors say he and another man broke into the home of a 62-year-old Tacoma resident June 27 to retrieve items they’d lined up near the front door during a break-in the day before. Coggins threw a hatchet at the homeowner when the man surprised the burglars, according to court documents. The hatchet missed its mark.
The homeowner, who’d armed himself with a 12-gauge shotgun, fired at the hatchet thrower and wounded him in the shoulder, the documents show.
Coggins later sought treatment for a gunshot wound at a hospital, and police tracked him there, according to prosecutors. He was released from the hospital Tuesday and arrested.
Police continue to investigate the burglary, and additional arrests are expected.
