Snowmobile riders wanted for panel

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is looking for winter-sports enthusiasts to serve on the Washington State Snowmobile Advisory Committee. The committee has two positions that will soon become vacant. One position is for a snowmobiler who lives in Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, King, Clallam, Jefferson or Island counties. Another position is for an at-large candidate to represent nonmotorized winter sports enthusiasts.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is looking for winter-sports enthusiasts to serve on the Washington State Snowmobile Advisory Committee. The committee has two positions that will soon become vacant. One position is for a snowmobiler who lives in Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, King, Clallam, Jefferson or Island counties. Another position is for an at-large candidate to represent nonmotorized winter sports enthusiasts.

Nominations must be received by July 31. New appointments begin Oct. 1.

The committee is made up of six snowmobilers and three representatives from nonmotorized winter sports. The committee also has one representative each from the state Department of Natural Resources, state Department of Fish and Wildlife and Washington Association of Counties. Also included is an ex-officio member from the Washington Department of Licensing.

The committee meets at least two weekends each year, once during the winter and once during the summer. The committee reviews vital issues and advises the commission and its staff on program policy and funding priorities for snow removal, trail grooming, sanitation, education and enforcement. Members are appointed by the commission and may serve up to two, three-year terms. Travel, lodging and meal costs for the meetings are reimbursed.

  • North Cascades Highway clearing to begin March 25

    Washington Department of Transportation crews will begin clearing the North Cascades Highway on March 25 and might have the road open by early May, the agency said Thursday, March 7.

    On Tuesday, avalanche-control specialists Mike Stanford and Harlan Sheppard rode snowmobiles from the Early Winters information center to Rainy Pass, measuring snow depths at more than two dozen avalanche chutes and other sites.

    Snow depths at the summit of Washington Pass measured about 5 feet, compared to 7.5 feet last year, while the snow was 5.5 feet deep at Rainy Pass, compared to 8 feet last year.

    The Northwest Washington Steelheaders are making final arrangements for their 2013 banquet and auction that's set for Saturday, March 9, at the Deming Logging Show Museum.

    Because these functions can take considerable energy to organize and bring off, the club took last year off, but it is coming back with a big effort this year.

    This is the now-independent sport-fishing group's primary annual fundraiser. Most of the proceeds will go to boost releases of hatchery winter-run steelhead smolts into the Nooksack River.
