100 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 16, 1912
Using carpenters’ tools, amateur cracksmen last night attempted to force the safe of the Roberts Brothers grocery, at Division Avenue and North I Street. Their bungling work, however, was not successful and they were forced to satisfy themselves with about $8 in small change, found in numerous cash drawers about the store.
75 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 16, 1937
Plans are practically completed for the annual Valley Days celebration sponsored by the Volunteer Fireman’s association, which will open Monday and last through the week. The show will be located on the Patterson lot at Fourth and Fifth avenues.
50 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 16, 1962
Pierce County commissioners have approved a special ballot measure for the Sept. 11 primary election asking for a million dollars or approximately 3.5 mills countywide for the county park program. The commissioners said the money would be used for the acquisition of park sites, the improvement of buildings and park facilities at park sites and more.
