100 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 18, 1912
A doe and her fawn on the track stopped an incoming Steilacoom car this morning in the Chambers Creek canyon. The motorman saw the interesting pair in time to avoid killing them. The fawn, a little fellow not more than 14 inches in height, had not long been on this curious Earth. It viewed the oncoming car with big, soft eyes showing alarm, but its wobbly legs refused to carry it to the safety of the underbrush on the hillsides. Led by the conductor, who cautioned quiet, as to not frighten the animals, the passengers left the car and shooed the little fellow off the track.
75 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 18, 1937
Take a perfect day, a dock transformed into an outdoor dining room, two and one-half hours of water sport; add several dashes of community spirit, shake well and you have the 11th annual Dash Point dock dinner and dance held at the point. The huge water carnival, dinner and dance has, according to committeemen, enjoyed 11 years of unmarred weather. The heat brought many to the rendezvous early in the afternoon and the entertainment kept them until the late hour.
50 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 18, 1962
The Senate has killed the administration’s compromise medical care plan for the elderly on a 52-48 vote branded by President John F. Kennedy as “a most serious defeat for every American family.” Kennedy promptly fired his stinging reverse by a coalition of Republican and Southern Democrats into a major issue for the November congressional elections and said he would offer the program again next year.
