Miller Bolaños scored his first MLS goal as Chivas USA beat Portland, 1-0, on Wednesday in Carson, Calif., to extend the Timbers’ streak of road futility.
Portland was shut out for its sixth consecutive road game in seven of nine road games this season (0-7-2). The Timbers last scored a road goal April 14 in a 3-1 loss at Los Angeles.
Since joining MLS last year, the Timbers have yet to score more than one goal in any road match, a span of 26 games.
Bolaños’ goal was just the 12th that Chivas has scored in 18 games. It came at an opportune time against an opponent nearly even in the Western Conference standings. Chivas now sits four points in front of Portland.
In the 16th minute, Ryan Smith dribbled past Portland’s Steven Smith and held off defender Mamadou Danso before sending a ball across the goal area. Goalkeeper Troy Perkins dived but got only a hand on it. Bolaños finished into an empty net.
Galaxy 2, at Whitecaps 2: Second-half substitute Jose Villarreal scored in the 87th minute to give Los Angeles a tie with Vancouver. David Beckham also scored for L.A. in the second half as the Galaxy overcame a 2-0 deficit. Gershon Koffie and Barry Robson scored first-half goals for the Whitecaps.
At Red Bulls 1, Fire 0: Thierry Henry scored his first goal since April 28 to lead New York over Chicago. Henry’s 10th goal of the season helped New York improve to 6-0-3 in home games – the only MLS team that is undefeated at home.
At Toronto FC 2, Rapids 1: Newly acquired forward Andrew Wiedeman scored his first MLS goal, in the 68th minute, to lift Toronto FC over Colorado. The 22-year-old was playing in just his 10th career MLS game and was making his second appearance since being acquired from FC Dallas.
At Dynamo 2, Sporting KC 1: Calen Carr scored twice, and Houston extended its unbeaten streak to five games by ending Kansas City’s unbeaten streak at three games.
At Earthquakes 2, FC Dallas 1: Marvin Chavez scored against his former team, and Alan Gordon added his eighth goal of the season to lead San Jose over Dallas.
At Impact 2, Revolution 1: Sanna Nyassi volleyed the winner in the 68th minute to give Montreal the victory over New England.
