100 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 19, 1912
Frequent stalling of cars on the cable line in the last three days was brought to the attention of the municipal commission this morning by Commissioner of Public Safety A.U. Mills. The commissioners joined in criticizing the company and they voted unanimously to ask President Shackleford to come before the council and explain. The fact that the cable has been stopped in the middle of the day for the last three days, giving much inconvenience to persons required to walk up the hills in the glare of the hot sun, was brought forward by Mills. His demand that “something be done about it” resulted in suggestions from the other commissioners.
75 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 19, 1937
Seventeen persons died violently in the Northwest over the weekend, nine of them in the waters or lakes and streams. Four of a party of 10 on an outing trip drowned in Fernan Lake, near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, last night. They were Rena Wergland, 42, Kellogg, Idaho; Mr. and Mrs. K.D. Wilson, 30 and 21, and Miss Alice Philo, 20, all of Spokane. Their boat capsized.
50 YEARS AGO TODAY: JULY 19, 1962
Todd Chemical Co. of Seattle will establish a chemical plant employing 12 persons on rented Port of Tacoma property, it was disclosed recently. Port commissioners approved a month-to-month rental for 5,200 square feet of Building 361 of the Port Industrial Yard where the plant will be situated. Todd Co., established for 30 years, manufactures industrial floor finishes and cleaning material.
