HUD deputy secretary to tour Tacoma’s efforts

Maurice Jones, deputy secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will visit Tacoma on Monday. Jones will review how HUD funds have been used in Tacoma and will speak with city, housing and school officials,

“Tacoma in particular and the Puget Sound region in general have offered a number of cutting-edge innovations in the way our housing and community development resources are put to work,” Jones said in a department release Friday.

Jones’ visit will begin at 11:30 a.m. Monday at McCarver Elementary School, where he will join Mayor Marilyn Strickland, Housing Authority Director Michael Mirra and others to discuss the McCarver Elementary Education Initiative.

Funded in part by HUD, the first-of-a-kind initiative is aimed at stabilizing school enrollment and, as a result, improving achievement.
