Tracking local golfers on the PGA tour
Over the weekend: The 141st British Open, Thursday through Sunday, Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club, Lytham St. Annes, England.
In the field: Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley and Tacoma’s Troy Kelly.
Stanley’s fourth-round score: 6-over-par 76.
Position: Stanley (5-over 285) tied for 39th, 12 strokes behind winner Ernie Els (7-under 273), who shot 68 on Sunday. Kelly (8-over 148) missed the cut Friday.
Recap: As it turned out, if a golfer from back in the pack could make an early run, he could have contended. But like many in the field, Stanley struggled on a windier, firmer golf course Sunday. And like many who fell back, Stanley did it early (three bogeys in first six holes). Still, the Bellarmine Prep product registered his best finish at a major championship (and earned $32,023), eclipsing his tie for 44th at the 2011 British Open. And quietly, after a rough patch last spring, he has made four consecutive cuts.
Next for Stanley: RBC Canadian Open starting Thursday at Hamilton Golf and Country Club in Ancaster, Ontario.
