Suspicious package found at Tacoma schools site

Tacoma police explosives experts were investigating an unusual package found Monday outside the Tacoma Public Schools Professional Development Center.

Tacoma’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal team rendered the device safe, and it will be examined to determine whether it was an explosive, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said Monday.

A security official found the package outside the building at 6501 N. 23rd St. about 4:30 p.m., Tacoma Public Schools spokeswoman Stacy Flores said.

The few people working in the building over the summer had left for the day before the package was found, she said.
