Take a hike at Mount St. Helens

An upcoming Mount St. Helens Institute hike will take participants through the heart of the blast zone.

The 10-mile hike, part of the institute’s annual series of field seminars, will take place Aug. 11. Participants must register by Aug. 9.

Led by guides from the institute, the hike from Johnston Ridge Observatory will include occasional stops for science lessons as well as amazing views of the volcano and the recovering landscape.

Participants should be in good shape and able to hike 10 miles with some elevation gain and over some challenging terrain. Also, be prepared for changing mountain weather.

The cost is $75 a person and includes a shuttle back to your car at day’s end. Funds raised from the hike will be used to support the institute’s science education and conservation programs.
