Cowlitz County Sheriff Mark Nelson says in a press release that elements of the scene discovered Friday make the death appear suspicious. The campsite was otherwise unoccupied.
The campsite is on the east bank of the Cowlitz River in the Cowlitz Gardens area of North Kelso.
A woman in her early 20s was found dead in an alleyway in the 1200 block of South Ainsworth Avenue on Sunday afternoon, and Tacoma police are investigating what they say are suspicious circumstances surrounding her death, spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The man found dead Tuesday in a Pasco hotel has been identified as Pete Martinez, 61, of Pasco.
Franklin County Coroner Dan Blasdel said in a Thursday news release that he died from inhaling smoke and carbon monoxide. His manner of death is undetermined, said the release.
The circumstances are suspicious enough that police are investigating the death as a possible homicide.
