Ask the Department of Fish & Wildlife:

Are there rewards for reporting a poacher?

Information that contributes substantially to an arrest of another person for violation of various state fish and wildlife laws, including the loss of fish, wildlife or damage to state Department of Fish and Wildlife property, could be eligible for a cash reward.

Hunting bonus points (up to 10) may be awarded for violation information about illegal hunting or killing of big game or an endangered species. Bonus points provide a greatly improved chance of drawing special permits for hunting. Bonus points can be applied to only one special hunt category each time a reward is approved.

If more than one individual is involved in providing the poaching information, the associated reward is normally prorated among them.

Information for this feature comes from wdfw.wa.gov/help.

  • More pinks, coho expected to area waters this fall

With 154,000 adult pink salmon expected to return this summer to the Nooksack River, Whatcom County anglers can start getting ready for backyard humpy fishing rather than a road trip.

State and tribal managers want at least 50,000 of these fish to get back to the spawning grounds, primarily in the North and Middle forks, and with the Nooksack likely to muddy up with glacial flour escapement, that won't be a problem.

Preparations for catching and storing these every-other-year returning pinks may involve buying more No. 2 FST lures or perhaps rigging up a smoker. Regardless, local anglers won't have to travel to the Skagit unless they want to.

  • Entry period is on for fall hunt permit drawings

The entry deadline for Washington's 2013 controlled hunt lotteries is midnight Wednesday, May 22.

Individual and party applicants have 27 drawing pools from which to choose, and may enter as many drawings as their licensing and age or training qualify them for.

Among the special hunt categories are eight for deer, seven for elk, six for moose, four for bighorn sheep and one each for mountain goat and fall turkey permit seekers. Secondarily, pool categories also allocate these special permissions to master hunters, seniors, youth and disabled people.
