Volunteers needed for chum work

The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, working with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, is again conducting the Hood Canal Summer Chum Project on the Union River.

The Union River summer chum run has been used as a donor stock to reintroduce summer chum to the Tahuya River.

The salmon trap will be operating this season from Aug. 15-Oct. 15.

The trap, located near Belfair, is monitored 24 hours a day. Volunteers work in pairs and can choose from a variety of day/overnight shifts: 8 a.m.-noon, noon-5: p.m., 5-10 p.m. and 10 p.m.-8 a.m.

The enhancement group is currently seeking volunteers for all shifts. No experience necessary; training will be provided.

To volunteer, contact Michelle or Kim at 360-275-3575 or email myers@hcseg.org. You can learn more at hcseg.org.
