Brian Roberts’ frustrating season is over.
The Baltimore Orioles second baseman will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. Roberts made the announcement Sunday, less than 24 hours after he began a rehabilitation assignment with Class A Aberdeen.
“It just hasn’t responded the way we were hoping it would,” Roberts said, shortly before the Orioles faced Oakland. “Deep down in my gut, I think I knew before last night.”
Roberts was placed on the disabled list July 3. The first doctor he spoke to recommended surgery, but a second physician suggested he attempt to rehabilitate the injury. Robert received a cortisone shot and worked out at the team facility in Florida before heading to Aberdeen.
After going 0-for-4 with a walk on Saturday night, he abandoned the plan.
Roberts, 34, missed the start of the season with a concussion. He returned on June 12 and got three hits against Pittsburgh, but was batting .182 in 17 games before going on the disabled list.
ASTROS SEND INFIELDER TO ARIZONA
The going-young Houston Astros traded third baseman Chris Johnson to the Arizona Diamondbacks for two minor leaguers on Sunday.
Houston obtained infielder Bobby Borchering and outfielder Marc Krauss in the trade, Houston’s fifth this month. After opening the season with a payroll of about $61 million, the Astros have jettisoned veterans earning a combined $49 million. Jed Lowie, at $1.15 million, is Houston’s highest-paid player.
Johnson said he was surprised he got dealt.
“I know that’s strange to say because it seems like everyone is being traded here,” Johnson said. “When they called me out to the cage, I was in shock. I didn’t know what to do. This is all pretty new to me.”
STREET, PADRES AGREE TO NEW DEAL
All-Star closer Huston Street and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a $14 million, two-year contract through 2014.
The deal announced Sunday includes $7 million salaries for each of the next two seasons and a $7 million team option for 2015.
Street, who turns 29 Thursday, is 2-0 with an 0.91 ERA and has converted all 17 save opportunities in his first season with the Padres.

Rangers right-hander Neftali Feliz was scratched from a scheduled rehabilitation start Sunday at Triple-A Round Rock because of discomfort in his right elbow. He will undergo further evaluation and a timetable for his return is undetermined. … American League batting leader and Angels rookie Mike Trout did not start in the game against Tampa Bay because of a sore left knee. … Lew Ford’s five-year wait to return to the major leagues ended when his contract was purchased from Triple-A Norfolk by the Orioles. … Nationals first baseman Adam LaRoche left the game against Milwaukee due to tightness in his back. … Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton will begin a rehabilitation assignment with Class A Jupiter on Wednesday.
