A dog died Tuesday when a fire tore through a Sumner house, according to East Pierce Fire & Rescue.

The blaze in the 8100 block of 148th Avenue Court East was reported about 12:45 p.m. Fire officials said the flames quickly spread to the attic before the blaze was contained.

An elderly couple who lived there escaped on their own, but their 12-year-old dog died.

Cause of the fire was under investigation, but a candle left burning in a bedroom is believed to have started the fire, officials said.
