A Coast Guard helicopter has rescued a teenage girl from the surf on the northwest Oregon coast.
The Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River at Mount Vernon collapsed Thursday evening, dumping vehicles and people into the water, the Washington State Patrol said.
The four-lane bridge collapsed at its north end about 7 p.m., Trooper Mark Francis said. Several rescue boats and private vessels, including one from the Skagit County Sheriff's Office, are on the river between Burlington and Mount Vernon, trying to help people who are sitting atop their cars in the water.
Three people have been rescued from the water, according to the Skagit County Sheriff's Office. Other unconfirmed reports said some people were trapped in the water by debris.
