The Puyallup City Council has narrowed the field of interim city manager candidates to three. Interviews are planned Monday.

The finalists are Michael G. Caldwell, who most recently was interim city manager in Medina; William R. McDonald, who retired as city administrator of DuPont in 2010; and Richard A. Zais Jr., the longtime Yakima city manager who retired last year.

The man selected will run day-to-day government operations in the city of 37,000 people until a permanent city manager is hired. City Manager Ralph Dannenberg is departing after a breakdown in his relationship with a majority of the council.

The City Council last week agreed to hire the Prothman Co., a consulting firm, to coordinate the interim manager search. The council considered seven candidates during a special meeting Tuesday.

The city’s public works director is the interim city manager for now.
