National Lentil Festival
What: The Palouse region of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho grows a quarter of the lentils in the United States. Since 1989, the National Lentil Festival has celebrated this legume that is consumed by people all over the world.
When: Friday-Saturday
Location: Downtown Pullman
Street Fair: There is something for everyone during this Friday night event. The Street Fair features free lentil chili, live entertainment and games and activities for the kids. There also will be vendors selling their wares and a microbrew tasting tent for those 21 and older . The chili feed begins at 5 p.m. More than 350 gallons of chili are likely to be served.
Saturday events: There will be a pancake breakfast from 8-11 a.m. and the parade starts at 11 a.m. Activities in Reaney Park include athletic events, a 5K fun run and a 100K bike ride. There will be a kid’s area, more vendors, live music, the Legendary Lentil Cook-off, with a $1,000 top prize, and the microbrew tasting tent.
Did you know?: The official mascot of the National Lentil Festival is Tase T. Lentil. His close cousin, Dan D. Pea, is the mascot of the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council.
Cost: Many events are free, but others like the pancake breakfast have a fee.
