Work is left to be done for Olympia’s Jarred Bossio and Enumclaw’s Tyler Salsbury if they want to stick around at the 112th U.S. Amateur.
Bossio shot a 2-over-par 72 (tied for 84th) at CommonGround Golf Course, the assisting course, and Salsbury had a 77 (tied for 230th) on the same layout in the first round of stroke play Monday in Denver.
Both will play famed Cherry Hills Country Club today. The top 64 advance to match play.
Bossio, who recently finished his golf eligibility at the University of Idaho, was 4 over early on his second nine but rallied with birdies on the incoming par-5 holes at Nos. 3 and 7.
Salsbury, who is enrolling at the University of Washington next month, made four consecutive bogeys (Nos. 4-7).
UW senior Chris Williams, the top-ranked amateur golfer in the world who recently won the Western Amateur, shot 65 at CommonGround and trails leader Bobby Wyatt by one shot.
