Leslie Norman of Tacoma just missed having the winning Westport catch of the week by a few ounces the last time she entered.

On Aug. 12 she landed a 21-pound, 4-ounce chinook off a charter boat out of Westport and won the $500 weekly derby prize from the Westport Charterboat Association.

Thomas Hawver of Puyallup caught the biggest chinook derby winner so far this seaosn, a 32-pound, 9-ounce fish.

Anglers can enter the derby for a chance at winning one of Westport’s summer-long contests, furnished by local businesses and the charter boat association. Tickets are $5 each, and $10 during the halibut season. An annual prize of $2,500 is paid out for the largest chinook, $1,500 for the largest coho and lingcod, $1,000 each is paid out for the largest halibut, and albacore tuna.

The salmon fishing season is scheduled to run through Sept. 23, five days per week, Sundays-Thursdays. Go to charterwestport.com/seasons.html to get species and limit details.
