Five new free half-day preschools for kids from low-income neighborhoods will open in Tacoma schools this September.

The preschools, funded with federal Title I money, will open at Arlington, Boze, Mann, Stafford and Stanley elementary schools. In addition, Whitman Elementary will continue its current Title I preschool program.

One goal of preschool classes for kids from low-income neighborhoods is to boost their kindergarten readiness and put them on par with children from more affluent families who can afford private preschool.

A total of 180 students will be able to attend the new preschools. While federal grants cover the cost of classes, parents are responsible for providing transportation.

To qualify, children must live within designated attendance areas, must be 4 years old by Aug. 31 and must take a simple academic screening test.

For more information, call the Title I office of Tacoma Public Schools at 253-571-1111.
