An Auburn woman in critical condition after being hit by a car last month died Sunday, and the charges against the driver will be raised to vehicular homicide, King County prosecutors said Monday.

Samuel Jordan Cruz, 25, was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs when his car hit Stacy Ankerfelt as she was standing by her car outside her Auburn home, according to charging papers. The crash happened about 6 p.m. July 19 near the 100 block of J Street Southeast.

Prosecutors initially charged Cruz with vehicular assault, but will amend that to vehicular homicide within the next few days, spokesman Dan Donohoe said.

Ankerfelt taught fifth- and sixth-graders at Scenic Hill Elementary in Kent.
