A spokesman for the Armys Criminal Investigation Command in Virginia confirmed Monday that a Saturday death at Joint Base Lewis-McChord was a homicide.
Chris Grey of the Criminal Investigation Command said the Army has apprehended a suspect. The suspect is a soldier who is not assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
A woman who identified herself as the victims mother told The News Tribune on Monday that members of the Armys Criminal Investigation Division had confirmed for her that her daughter was stabbed in the chest and that her son-in-law was being held in custody on base.
Officials told her that he called 911 after his wife had bled out, she said.
The News Tribune is not identifying the family or the deceased because the military has yet to release the name of the victim. The newspaper generally does not publish names of someone suspected of a crime until the person has been charged.
The mother initially contacted The News Tribune Sunday to say that the suspect was her son-in-law. He was assigned to a base in South Korea, and his family planned to join him.
She learned of the death Sunday from her 14-year-old granddaughter, who she said witnessed the stabbing.
She arrived at the base Monday from Wisconsin and said officials wanted to speak with her more today.
