It may not count in the standings, but the Green Bay Packers will have a chance to atone for their only loss of the 2011 regular season when the reigning NFC North champions host the Kansas City Chiefs in the final warm-up for both teams from Lambeau Field.

The lone blemish on the splendid 15-1 record the Packers took into last year's playoffs came at the hands of the Chiefs, with Kansas City delivering a 19-14 upset at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 15. The contest was the Chiefs' first outing under then-interim head coach Romeo Crennel, who was elevated to the permanent post after the club won two of its final three bouts.

Green Bay may need to get off to a quick start to avenge last season's loss, with head coach Mike McCarthy planning to play his regulars for only a brief period in the first quarter. 2011 NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers likely will be out after the opening series before giving way to backup Graham Harrell.

While the final outcome may be essentially meaningless, Thursday's matchup is an important one for Harrell. The former practice-squad player began camp as the overwhelming favorite to take over for the departed Matt Flynn as Rodgers' main understudy, but he hasn't performed well in the preseason, leading to speculation that the Packers could target an available veteran in the days leading up to the Sept. 9 regular-season opener against San Francisco.

Harrell went just 5-of-12 for 26 yards and took three sacks in relief of Rodgers in last week's 27-13 victory at Cincinnati. Over Green Bay's three games, he's completed slightly over 50 percent (32-of-63) of his throws for 261 yards with two interceptions and only one touchdown.

Rodgers' overall numbers haven't been particularly good either, but he did engineer a pair of first-half touchdown drives against the Bengals and capped both possessions with scoring runs. The standout signal-caller led all players with 52 rushing yards on six scrambles in addition to the two touchdowns.

As a passer, Rodgers finished 12-of-22 for 154 yards and was intercepted once.

Running back Cedric Benson had an impressive debut in a Packers uniform during last week's triumph. The ex-Bengal, signed by Green Bay midway through training camp, gained 38 yards on only six rushes and added a 10-yard reception.

Wide receiver Greg Jennings caught two of Rodgers' passes for 37 yards in his first preseason action of the year, having missed Green Bay's first two tests with a concussion. Tight end Jermichael Finley (thigh, personal) has yet to appear in a game this summer, but is expected to get in some work on Thursday.

Notable Packers who definitely won't play include running back James Starks (toe), defensive end Ryan Pickett (calf) and cornerback Davon House (shoulder). Starting inside linebacker Desmond Bishop (torn hamstring) was placed on season-ending injured reserve on Monday.

Crennel will take the same approach as McCarthy for this game, with the starters receiving limited reps before being pulled. The extra snaps could come in handy after the Chiefs were blown out at home by Seattle this past Friday.

Kansas City struggled in all phases in its 44-14 trouncing by the Seahawks. The defense allowed 189 rushing yards as well as two touchdown passes by Seattle rookie Russell Wilson, starting quarterback Matt Cassel had an interception returned 75 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and the special teams permitted a 92-yard punt return score to Golden Tate.

There were a few good performances on the Chiefs' side, however. Undrafted rookie running back Nate Eachus rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown on only 10 carries, slot receiver Dexter McCluster came up with seven catches for 61 yards and a score and top running back Jamaal Charles amassed 32 yards on six attempts.

Cassel stayed in the game until late in the third quarter and ended with 168 yards on 19-of-34 passing with one touchdown and the aforementioned pick.

Kansas City will be without several defensive starters for Thursday's tilt as they attempt to get healthy for the team's Week 1 opener against Atlanta. Cornerback Brandon Flowers remains sidelined with a heel problem, while end Glenn Dorsey (knee), free safety Kendrick Lewis (shoulder) and nose tackle Anthony Toribio (ankle) are currently banged up.

Rookie Dontari Poe, the Chiefs' first-round selection in April's draft, will take over for Toribio.

The Packers edged the Chiefs by a 20-19 count at Lambeau Field in last year's preseason closer, evening the overall series at 6-6-1.

Robert Griffin III posted the biggest win of his rookie season as his touchdown pass in the fourth quarter helped Washington edge New York, 17-16, in an NFC East battle at FedEx Field. With the win, the struggle for the top spot in the division got a little closer as the Giants (7-5) now hold just a one-game lead over the Redskins (6-6) and Cowboys, who defeated the Eagles on Sunday night. Griffin passed for 163 yards on 13-of-21 attempts and added 72 yards on five carries as Washington won its third straight, all against division opponents. Alfred Morris carried the ball 22 times for 124 yards while Pierre Garcon caught eight passes for 106 yards and a touchdown in the win. Eli Manning was 20- for-33 with 280 yards and a touchdown and Martellus Bennett had five catches for 82 yards and a score for the Giants, who have dropped three of their last four. Cam Newton passed for two touchdowns and ran in two more as the Carolina Panthers took a 30-22 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in a battle between two last-place teams. Newton finished the game 18-for-28 with 306 yards through the air and added 52 yards on 15 carries for the Panthers (3-8), who snapped a two-game slide but still sit at the bottom of the NFC South, two games back of New Orleans. Steve Smith had four catches for 60 yards and became the 27th player all-time in the NFL to go over 11,000 receiving yards for his career. Gary Barnidge and Brandon LaFell had first-quarter touchdown catches in the win. Rookie Bryce Brown made his first career start in place of an injured LeSean McCoy and set a single-game rookie record for the Eagles (3-8) with 178 yards. He carried the ball 19 times and had two scores along with four catches for 11 yards, but had a pair of fumbles in the third quarter. McCoy suffered a concussion in last week's loss to Washington. Nick Foles made his second straight start under center as Michael Vick is still recovering from a concussion. He went 16- for-21 in the game, but managed just 119 yards as Philadelphia has lost seven straight for the first time since losing the final seven games of the 1994 season and are two games behind Washington and Dallas for last place in the NFC East.

Detroit wideout Calvin Johnson entered the record books on Saturday, breaking Jerry Rice's mark for most receiving yards in a season in NFL history. But as has been the case for most of the season, his stellar performance came in yet another loss. Matt Ryan threw four touchdown passes, and the Atlanta Falcons clinched the NFC's top seed with a 31-18 win over the Lions at Ford Field. Ryan was 25-of-32 for 279 yards and tied Steve Bartkowski for the most passing touchdowns in a single season in franchise history with 31. Bartkowski set the record in 1980. Roddy White caught two of the scores and finished with 153 yards on eight receptions for Atlanta (13-2), which produced 17 points off three Detroit turnovers. Johnson made 11 grabs for 225 yards, upping his season total to 1,892. Rice had 1,848 yards in 1995 with San Francisco. It wasn't the only NFL record the player known as "Megatron" broke as he became the first player to record at least 100 receiving yards in eight straight games. Johnson surpassed a mark set by Charley Hennigan in 1961 and matched by Michael Irvin in 1995. Matthew Stafford completed 37-of-56 passes for 443 yards with one interception for the Lions (4-11), who have lost seven in a row.

Despite only passing for 112 yards, Ryan Fitzpatrick did account for three touchdowns in leading the Buffalo Bills to a 34-18 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Fitzpatrick threw touchdowns to Stevie Johnson and Scott Chandler to go along with a rushing score. He completed only 9-of-17 attempts. The Buffalo tandem of Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller combined to run for 186 yards. Jackson finished with 109 yards on 25 carries, while Spiller totaled 77 yards -- 44 of which came on a fourth-quarter touchdown -- for the Bills (5-7). Chad Henne was 18-of-41 for 208 yards with one touchdown and an interception for Jacksonville (2-10).

The Atlanta Falcons got their revenge, and made quite a statement as well in doing so. Matt Ryan threw three touchdown passes, including a pair to Julio Jones, and the Falcons dealt the New York Giants their first regular-season shutout in 16 years with an authoritative 34-0 victory at the Georgia Dome. Atlanta (12-2) got its payback for a 24-2 throttling by the Giants during last season's NFC Wild Card Playoffs behind a near-flawless performance from Ryan, with the standout quarterback completing a sharp 23-of-28 passes for 270 yards without a turnover. The Falcons' defense did its part as well, intercepting New York's Eli Manning twice in the first half and stopping the Giants on downs three times over the course of the game. Manning managed just 161 yards on an off-target 14-of-26 efficiency as New York (8-6) was held scoreless in a non-playoff setting for the first time since a 24-0 setback at Philadelphia on Dec. 1, 1996. Jones ended with 74 yards on six catches and Tony Gonzalez added a touchdown grab for the NFC South champion Falcons, who can clinch a first-round playoff bye if San Francisco loses to New England on Sunday night. The result could be considerably more costly for the Giants, now 2-4 over their last six outings. New York would relinquish its one-game lead over Dallas and Washington in the NFC East if either the Cowboys or Redskins win their Week 15 matchups.
