A 23-year-old woman died Friday morning when the pickup she was riding in rolled at least twice before crashing into a chain-link fence and trees in Spanaway, the Pierce County Sheriffs Department reported.
Investigators said they found beer cans in the truck and believe the collision was alcohol-related.
Seven young adults were riding in the vehicle. Sheriffs Sgt. Mike Blair said three people were riding in the passenger compartment of the extended cab pickup and four were in the bed.
The wreck occurred at 5:45 a.m. as the truck was speeding in the 20300 block of 22nd Avenue East.
The driver lost control while going around a slight curve, rolled several times and went through a fence and into a stand of trees, narrowly missing a house. The truck caught fire, and neighbors rushed outside to douse the flames.
Most of the passengers were trapped inside until firefighters arrived to cut them out, Blair said.
Six of the young adults, between the ages of 19 and 22, were taken to local hospitals. A few were impaled by fence posts. The Pierce County Medical Examiners Office identified the passenger who died as Amanda Halvorson.
