Le’Veon Bell ran for a career-high 210 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 8 minutes, 12 seconds remaining as No. 13 Michigan State knocked off No. 24 Boise State, 17-13, in East Lansing, Mich., on Friday.
In a sloppy season opener, the Spartans turned the ball over four times and trailed 13-10 before Bell scored from 5 yards out midway through the fourth quarter. The Broncos drove to the Michigan State 42, but Joe Southwick’s pass on fourth-and-2 was broken up.
Bell and the Spartans then ran off the final 6:32.
Boise State was sluggish in its first game after losing standouts Kellen Moore and Doug Martin from last season’s explosive offense. The Broncos’ only touchdown came on Jeremy Ioane’s 43-yard interception return in the second quarter.
At No. 21 Stanford 20, San Jose State 17: Jordan Williamson kicked a career-long 46-yard field goal and the go-ahead score from 20 yards, and the Cardinal beat the Spartans.
Josh Nunes threw for 125 yards and a touchdown in his first start in place of Andrew Luck, the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft. But the redshirt junior struggled to move the offense.
The David Fales-Blake Jurich quarterback combo gave Stanford fits until De’Leon Eskridge fumbled in Spartans territory late in the third quarter. That set up Williamson’s tiebreaking kick.
FAN FALLS IN GEORGIA
A 20-year-old man fell about 35 feet from the upper level of the Georgia Dome during the Tennessee-North Carolina State game. His condition was unknown.
The man fell on another fan seated in the mezzanine area, The Georgia World Congress Center Authority, which operates the downtown football stadium, said in a statement.
The fan who was fallen on also was taken to the hospital. Authority spokeswoman Jennifer LeMaster said that she did not know the conditions of the injured fans. She did not release their names.
SEX ABUSE CLAIM
A freshman Saginaw Valley State player told police he was the victim of sexual abuse by veteran teammates after refusing to sing at dinner, according to a university police report.
The 25-page report details an investigation into the claim of the 17-year-old, who has since left the university. The teen alleged he was approached by teammates and asked if he would sing in front of the team at dinner on Aug. 13, a tradition for new players. After he said no and indicated he’d already sung twice, numerous teammates responded by surrounding him in the locker room, including some who touched him with their genitals, according to the report.
