A 41-year-old man is accused of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend’s 7-year-old son Monday night and handing the boy off to a family member who is a convicted sex offender, Fife police reported.

The boy’s mother reported him missing from a hotel in the 5200 block of 20th Street East.

She told police she left her son and ex-boyfriend together in a hotel room while she took a shower and emerged to find them gone. The woman called her ex-boyfriend several times to demand her son be brought back, but the man allegedly refused and hung up on her, police said.

He also is accused of stealing $900 from the woman.

Police officers discovered the man had just been released from jail last week for a domestic-violence incident and asked the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department for help in checking the home where he had earlier been arrested.

The man was found there alone and told deputies he had given the boy to his brother, who is a convicted sex offender.

Several hours later, the brother took a taxi to the hotel and returned the boy. Police said the child was unharmed.

The ex-boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of theft and kidnapping. His brother was arrested on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender.
