Minnesota-based Supervalu Inc. said today it plans to close 60 underperforming stores nationwide, including one Tacoma Save-A-Lot store and Albertson's stores in Sumner, Lacey, Kent and Auburn.
Minnesota-based Supervalu Inc. said today it plans to close 60 underperforming stores nationwide including eight in the Puget Sound area. Five of those eight are in the South Sound.
Among those stores are Save-A-Lots at 9820 Pacific Ave. in Tacoma and in Port Orchard. The Save-A-Lot at 1105 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Tacoma’s Hilltop business district will remain open, said Save-A-Lot spokeswoman Chon Tomlin.
Supervalu is going back to its wholesale roots, for better or worse.
CHICAGO — A Cerberus Capital Management LP-led investor group agreed to acquire Supervalu Inc.’s Albertsons, Acme, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Star Market grocery stores in a transaction valued at about $3.3 billion.
Stores in Idaho and around the West owned by Supervalu will be run by a Boise-based company.
Robert Miller, tasked with overseeing reunification of Idaho’s storied Albertsons supermarket chain, comes to the job with a deep background in the grocery business and respect in his field, say those how know him.
Supervalu is eliminating about 1,100 jobs nationwide, or about 3 percent of its workforce, less than a week after the supermarket operator completed the sale of five grocery chains.
