Bob Stevens, who recently retired from teaching at Nisqually Middle School and who formerly coached River Ridge High School boys basketball and volleyball, died Tuesday after a short bout with cancer. He was 62.
Stevens, the father of former University of Washington football standout and NFL veteran Jerramy Stevens, taught physical education, health and math in North Thurston Public Schools from 1989 until his retirement following the 2011-12 school year. He taught at Nisqually from 1996 until his retirement in June.
Stevens was the inaugural boys basketball coach at River Ridge when the high school opened in 1993. In volleyball, he led the Hawks to a third-place finish at the 1995 AAA state tournament in Spokane. The third-place finish remains the best in program history.
For the past 10 years, he coached volleyball at North Mason High School in Belfair before stepping down following the 2011 season. The Kitsap Sun reported in July that Stevens resigned for health reasons.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor.
