A Puyallup man was airlifted to the hospital after falling off a pickup truck in the Capitol State Forest early Saturday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.

A 27-year-old Auburn was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 at 1:50 a.m. when his passenger, Rowdy J. Scroggs, 37, climbed on top of the cab and fell off, landing in the road, according to the State Patrol.

Scroggs was flown to Harborview Medical Center where he remains in stable condition, according to Trooper Guy Gill. The driver was not injured.

Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. The driver was booked in Thurston County Jail and is being accused of vehicular assault.

"Drivers are subject to the same laws while driving in the Capitol Forest as anywhere else," Gill said. "The poor decision making by all involved is very obvious, but the bottom line is this vehicle should not have even been moving."
