Brett Hundley passed for 305 yards and four touchdowns in an outstanding Rose Bowl debut, Datone Jones sacked Taylor Martinez for a tiebreaking safety with 8 minutes, 44 seconds to play, and UCLA surprised No. 17 Nebraska, 36-30, on Saturday night in Pasadena, Calif.
Johnathan Franklin rushed for 217 yards and caught an 8-yard TD pass with 2:13 to play for the Bruins, who improved to 2-0 under new coach Jim Mora with an impressive offensive performance against the Cornhuskers (1-1).
Joseph Fauria caught two TD passes and Steven Manfro grabbed another from Hundley, the redshirt freshman who went 21-for-31 passing and coolly led the Bruins to 653 total yards.
After Jones’ ferocious sack put the Bruins ahead in a defense-dominated second half, Andrew Abbott intercepted a long pass by Martinez and returned it to the Nebraska 16, setting up Franklin’s TD catch.
No. 2 Southern Cal 42, Syracuse 29: Matt Barkley matched a school record with six touchdown passes, and Robert Woods was spectacular with 200 all-purpose yards and two scores against the Orange.
The rare trip to the Northeast for the Trojans was choppy at times, and Syracuse’s hurry-up offense kept USC (2-0) working hard for four quarters at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., the home of the Giants and Jets.
Led by Ryan Nassib, Syracuse (0-2) kept things close with consecutive touchdowns in the third quarter to make it 21-16 heading into the fourth.
At No. 4 Oregon 42, Fresno State 25: Kenjon Barner ran for 201 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Ducks past the Bulldogs.
De’Anthony Thomas ran for 102 yards and two additional scores for Oregon (2-0), which sprinted to a 35-6 lead in the first half before the Bulldogs (1-1) were able to slow them a bit in the second.
Sacramento State 30, at Colorado 28: Edgar Castaneda’s 30-yard field goal as time expired gave the Hornets a stunning win over the Buffaloes.
It’s the second consecutive season Sacramento State (1-1) of the Big Sky Conference Hornets won at a Pac-12 stadium. They upset Oregon State, 29-28, in overtime in last year’s opener.
This stunner dropped the Buffaloes (0-2) to 1-2 against FCS-level opponents.
At Cal 50, Southern Utah 31: Golden Bears cornerback Marc Anthony scored on a 61-yard interception return in the fourth quarter and Cal (1-1) shook off another sluggish start at home to beat the Thunderbirds (0-2).
At Stanford 50, Duke 13: Drew Terrell returned a punt 75 yards for a score and caught a 19-yard touchdown pass, Ed Reynolds took one of his two interceptions for another touchdown and the Cardinal (1-1) rebounded from a disappointing debut to roll past the Blue Devils (1-1).
