San Francisco 49ers kicker David Akers tied an NFL record by hitting a 63-yard field goal during Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers.
Akers got just enough behind the record-tying kick, as the ball bounced off and over the crossbar at the end of the first half. It was the veteran's third field goal of the game and gave the 49ers a 16-7 lead heading into the locker room.
Tom Dempsey hit a 63-yarder for New Orleans in 1970, Denver's Jason Elam matched the mark in 1998 and Oakland's Sebastian Janikowski accomplished the feat last year. Both Elam's and Janikowski's kicks came in the high altitude in Denver, Colorado.
