Joint Base Lewis-McChord officials Monday identified the soldier who died Thursday after his car crashed into a base guard shack.

Spc. Ryan T. Abbott, 35, of Grand Rapids, Mich., had been at JBLM about two years.

What caused his car to crash into an empty guard shack just before 5 a.m. on East Gate Road is not yet known, officials said.

Abbott was part of the 46th Air Support Battalion, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade, and had not deployed.
