The Sumatran tiger cub at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium will make his public debut Thursday.

He’ll be on exhibit in the zoo’s Cub Den starting at 1 p.m.

After that, visitors will see staff members interacting with the cub at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, including health checks and feedings – though his meals don’t last long and will be easy to miss, zoo spokeswoman Kris Sherman said.

The tiger was separated from mother Jaya days after his birth Aug. 22 because he was dehydrated, had a low temperature and was not getting enough milk, zoo staff members said.

A public survey will be released in the near future to help name the cub, Sherman said.

An estimated 300 of the endangered Sumatran tigers live in the wild, and births in zoos are extremely rare, according to the zoo.
