A 37-year-old Puyallup man narrowly avoided injury Tuesday morning after a trailer hitch smashed through his windshield, the Washington State Patrol said.

The accident occurred about 7:20 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near the Tacoma Dome.

The hitch was lying in the roadway when a car in front of the Puyallup man kicked it up and it sailed through the dump truck’s windshield, trooper Guy Gill said. The man suffered minor scrapes.
